18 Stay at home date ideas
1. Have a picnic
Picnics are a cute and simple date idea. While typically you would go out and do this in a park or a nice outdoor space somewhere, you can still get the same feels having it right in your own home. Be it in your living room or on the balcony or in your backyard.
Make a meal or put together a bunch of different little snacks and lay a nice blanket down.
Bonus points
Make sure to get the ambiance just right by grabbing a fan to get a nice “breeze” going haha. Don’t forget to bring some background music to add in some extra vibes.
2. Have a game night
There are many ways you can spin this one. Playing board games like Chutes and ladders, Monopoly, Chess, and Checkers, to name a few. There are soo many different board game options, so unlock your inner child and have at it!
Up the ante and try a new game for fun. I LOVE playing Ticket to Ride and have ever since I discovered it a few years ago. Risk is also another great alternative. These games are awesome because they require strategy and so you have to use your brain a little. Just remember to keep things fun and light because they can get pretty competitive! Been there, done that.
It didn’t end well….
Mix in some card games like crazy eights, and president, maybe even play a round of go fish just for the fun of it. What? Don’t look at me like that, it’s a classic.
3. Stargaze
If you live in a city, this might be a little harder but it’s still very much do-able. Hopefully, there isn’t too much light pollution and/ or you can simply wait for a clear night because this is an awesome date night idea.
Grab a big comfy blanket and head out on your balcony or into your backyard and lay down under the stars and enjoy this romantic and fun stargazing activity. See who can make out the different stars and constellations. Take some wine with you (or any other beverage of your choosing), as well as some snacks, and prepare to have a lovely night.
4. Cook a meal together
Look for a new recipe to try and make the meal together. Go all out if you want and make it a three-course meal. You can either make everything together or one person can make the appetizer, while the other prepares the dessert and then you can both go in on the entree together.
If you can’t decide who gets to make what, bring some friendly competition into the mix and go one round (or 3) of Rock paper scissors. The winner gets to choose!
5. Make a tent
Pitch a homemade fort in your living room, on your balcony, or in your backyard, using sheets and blankets, and anything else you can find around the house.
I honestly love making tents, I have ever since I was young. I don’t think it’s something I’ll ever tire of haha.
A tent is a great way to relieve a bit of your childhood, only this time, your significant other is there to make it more memorable. Making tents can be so much fun, especially if you like the great outdoors but you don’t actually want to go out in it this particular time.
If settings permit, gather wood and make a fire, and don’t forget the marshmallows and goods to make s’mores!
Don’t have a fireplace? No problem. Just get it up and running on your Tv screen, sound effects included. If you’re with Bell tv, flip to channel 1539 and if you’re with Rogers, then channel 204 or 574.
6. Connect your computer to your Tv and go through old travel photos.
I love reminiscing on past vacations. I have so many fond memories I’ve gathered over the years and it’s great looking back on them. After my big trip, I literally racked up over 10,000 photos in the span of 2 months. When Yann came to visit in June, I hooked up my computer and we spent a few hours going through our photos together. This is such a great time to bond over fond memories while taking in all the amazing things you did together. I highly recommend it!
7. Get a little personal with each other.
Tell each other your goals and dreams. Where do you see yourself if 2,3, or 5 years? Do your goals align? If not, what can you do/ plan so that they do intersect at some point? Talk with each other about fond memories you both love and reminisce on your past travels or plan the ones you want to take in the future.
8. Happy hour -cocktail time!
Take turns making each other a cocktail using whatever you have in your cabinets. You can even make it a friendly competition and see who can make the best cocktail. Don’t forget, appearance matters! You get bonus points for excellent presentation. Make sure to be serving up those drinks in your fancy glass sets and not just any old regular cup!
9. Get a massage
Yes, typically you go out for these but nowadays you can get the massage to come to you! You don’t even have to leave your house. With apps like Soothe, Wellcalm, and Massago, it’s super easy to book a couples massage for your next stay-at-home date. There is nothing more relaxing and bonding than getting a massage together.
I can honestly say the best massage I’ve had was from Promovment massage therapist and business owner Phylicia Samuel-John. Her hands are like gold people! She listens to exactly what you want and where you want worked on and provides the best service possible. Unfortunately, she does come solo, so if you book with her, you’ll have your massages one at a time, but trust me when I say it will be so worth it!
Alternatively, if your budget doesn’t allow for a paid massage, or with what’s going on right now where we can’t interact with others in close quarters, try then taking turns giving each other a massage! Don’t forget to set the tone and light some candles and put on some soothing spa music.
10. At-home spa
Coming off that last idea, bring the spa home by putting on some comfy clothes and getting comfortable on the couch. Sit back and relax as your significant other shows off their massage skills.
Start off with a nice relaxing face scrub and face massage and then finish off with a nice foot rub.
You’ll definitely need a large bowl (or bucket) of warm water to relax the feet in and then later rinse off. Follow this up by a nice exfoliating foot scrub, really massage it in (and don’t forget to go up to the calves people!). Finish off with a good moisturizer to leave the feet feeling amazing.
Bonus points for setting the mood by dimming the lights and/or lighting some aromatic candles and playing some calming spa music. Spotify has great playlists for this sort of thing.
11. Make it a french soiree and have yourself a wine, cheese and saucisson (dried sausage) night.
Pair some delicious red wine with some gourmet cheeses like camembert, or brie and serve it on bread. Obviously a baguette is the bread of choice, but don’t fear if you don’t have any. Simply toast some bread and cut it in pieces before topping it with the cheese. You can even completely substitute the bread for crackers, but let’s try to stay authentic here and say we’ll be serving up baguettes! Now don’t forget your dried sausage like chorizo to make your night complete. These tips come straight from Yann who was born and raised in France and knows his french delicacies ;).
12. Pizza and wine night
Or pizza and beer, whatever floats your boat! We love a good classic pizza night, so simple but oh so good. We had one just the other day! You can either order pizza in or you can take it up a notch and make it yourself! Or you just might have some in your freezer, so all you gotta do it just pop it in the oven and it’ll be ready in just 20 mins or so. Pair your pizza with your favourite beer or wine and you’ve just had yourself the best and easiest date night.
13. Wine and paint night
I think I see a pattern forming here. Lots of wine options included in these last few ideas, but wine not?! 😉 What can I say, wine pairs well with everything haha.
Okay okay, let’s get back into this, lucky number 13. Have a wine and paint night.
So obviously I know not everyone just has an easel laying around the house, so you can substitute paint and an easel for pencil crayons or quite simply crayons and paper. Print out some fun colouring sheets and start reliving your childhood, only with wine.
Want to stay true to the original idea? Well, I found a great post by an artist named Joann who has a fun and detailed guide on making your own painting in your home, no experience, or fancy equipment needed. You will need an easel though, so pop over to your nearest Walmart, or dollar store and pick a few up. Then definitely check out her post on creating your own paint and pour canvas and get ready to have fun!
14. Make dessert together
Who doesn’t love a good dessert right?! Look for a recipe online that looks easy enough that you could both do together. If you’re an expert baker (like me, if I do say so myself 😏) try not to take over but keep things fun and light sharing the tasks evenly. Trust me, it’s harder than it looks haha. Once those yummy aromas take over your house, you’ll probably want to eat them right away. But first, make sure to capture your beautiful and delicious finished product before diving in and devouring it!
15. Youtube yoga date!
Grab your yoga mat, hop on Youtube, and practice some yoga together that will get you into a seriously relaxed state. A yoga date is a great way to bond with your partner while you both work out and stretch out all those muscles alongside each other. I highly recommend Yoga with Adriene. I’ve done a lot of different yoga classes on YouTube and hers are by far the best. Make sure that if you or your partner have never done yoga before to start with an easier class, yoga is quite harder than it looks!
16. If the weather allows, have a BBQ.
Yann loves BBQs. It’s something he does a lot in France with friends and family. We opted to get a small propane one for the balcony so we could BBQ whenever we wanted in the summer. This can be a fun stay at home date idea when the weather is nice. Keep it simple with burgers, or hot dogs and buns, or spice it up by adding chicken to the mix and/or fish and veggies and making some kabobs. Either eat your deliciously prepared meal on the balcony (or in your backyard) or take it inside if it’s not perfect weather out and simply eat it at the dinner table.
17. Come up with a bucket list together
In idea #6 we spoke about looking at all the past adventures together. This step, look into the future together by planning out all the future trips you want to take and/or all the things you want to accomplish. Get a pen and paper, or open a doc on your computer. Hop on Google or Instagram, or my favorite Pinterest, and search out some beautiful destinations you might want to visit in the near (or far) future. My bucket list seems to keep growing by the day and I’m not mad about it haha. I’ve told Yann about all the places I want to see and he’s totally game which is awesome. But what’s even better is planning out, together, how and maybe when we would like to visit the different places.
18. Youtube scavenger
Okay, this one is probably the neatest idea yet. And I’m sad to say it’s not my own. I definitely saved a good one for last though. In my research, I found this awesome post by the dating divas on having a Youtube scavenger hunt. There are different challenges involved and they all sound equally as fun. I actually plan to play it with Yann tonight! There are even printables included as well as an invite video for you to send to your significant other to get them excited for your date night. So sure to check out this Youtube date night post for an evening of fun!
