Looking for a place to stay along the Great Ocean Road in Australia? Check out this cute Airbnb that came with excellent hospitality and some great personal touches in Mount Gambier.
~
After a big day driving down the Great Ocean Road, we settled in for one night at this Airbnb in Mount Gambier. It was just over the halfway mark from Melbourne to Cape Jarvis, which is where we were headed the following day.
The host usually greets her guests but, we didn’t actually meet her face to face because we arrived so late at the Airbnb, around 10:45 pm.
I updated her a few times throughout the afternoon as to when we might arrive. She was gracious about it when we said we’d get there really late and offered to turn the heat on for us so the room was warm when we got there. She also left the front light on and left the door open for us so that we wouldn’t have to deal with looking for the lockbox and putting in the code late at night.
Talk about great hospitality. Not only that but there were some lovely touches inside.
The Airbnb
The place had all the basics you would expect, a comfy bed, clean washroom, kitchen, sitting area.
I appreciate a good colour scheme and blue is my favourite colour, so I enjoyed all the blue accents around the little apartment.
Upon walking into the room, the bed is located by the front window. Beside that is the little sitting area with a map and 2 clocks above it. Across from the bed, a desk with some local magazines on it and a guestbook for people to sign. In the corner, an armoire with a flat-screen tv on top and some blue vases.
Continuing on through the door is the kitchen and dining area with the washroom off to the side. The kitchen had all the basics you would expect. Above the fridge was a big corkboard with a bunch of flyers for different restaurants in the area.
My favourite part, however, was that when you flipped the switch beside the one to turn on the bathroom light, the heated floors were activated as well as a light above the mirror that gave off a lot of warmth.
Better believe I used the crap out of that switch when I was in the bathroom. It was great.
The little touches
Besides the guest book that I made sure to sign before leaving, the 2 clocks that were up, really caught my eye. One clock was set to the current time in Mount Gambier but the other clock was set to the time back home in Toronto, which I thought was nice.
Another thing I thought was really cool was the map they had up with yellow pins stuck in different locations around the world showing where previous people that stayed there were from. And of course the pin for where we currently were with the words “You are here” written below it.
My stay
We enjoyed the night spent in the Airbnb.
There’s not much else to say as again, it was only one night. We had everything we needed, the water in the shower was nice and warm, the water pressure was good, the bed was comfy. We couldn’t ask for more.
I always wish I could spend more time in one place but I travel fast so that’s rarely something that occurs.
I know there is a lot to see and do in the Mount Gambier area and it looks beautiful as well from the few photos I saw and in looking through some of the books on the desk. So if you’re ever passing through the area, and time allows for it, definitely stay a few days so you can soak it all up.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
~Easy communication with the host
~Unit completely separate from the main house
~Heated floors in the bathroom
~Really comfy bed
~Thoughtful personal touches
Cons:
~This Airbnb is actually about 2 hours from the Great Ocean Road on the way to Adelaide. So it’s better to stay here if you’re driving to Adelaide or Kangaroo Island or driving from it.
~Can get cold if you’re there during the winter (but that’s what the heater is for!)
