Montmartre Bucket List Top things to do in Montmartre

Ride the Funicular

The Funicular is an electric tram that will take you directly to the base of the Sacre-Coeur. That’s right, there is no need to take all those stairs!

Go on a walking tour

Walking around is always the best way to visit a city. Montmartre has several companies that offer guided walking tours of the city.

Sacre-Coeur Basilica

This beautiful Basilica is an architectural and cultural landmark and it sits at the highest point in Montmartre. The building is open to the public and is free from 6 am to 1030pm. If you’re planning to go inside, make sure to dress appropriately as it is a church.

The Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge in Paris at night

Also known as a cabaret and the birthplace of the Can-Can. You definitely don’t want to miss the chance to watch one of their shows live!

Rue de Steinkerque

This street is filled with little shops where you can purchase trinkets and souvenirs on your way into Montmartre. This vibrant street also has restaurants and cafes to enjoy.

Musee de Montmartre

This museum is actually situated in a beautiful home atop the hill where several famous artists and writers lived. Find beautiful pieces in this museum that are symbols of the architecture that surrounds Montmartre.

Take a macaron making class

Take a cooking class with Mesny, who is an authentic French chef and offers hands-on macaron making classes. These classes have become a very popular activity when in Montmartre.

Musee de la vie Romantique

This museum of romance is the perfect thing to do in this city of love. It is located in a busy salon that was once a home but was converted in the 1830s. The museum organizes temporary exhibitions such as book readings, activities for kids, and concerts. The best time to visit is in between March and October so that you can enjoy the outdoor greenhouse and patio.

Place du Tertre

This place is not to be missed on your trip to Montmartre. Place du Tertre is the main square and the heart of Montmartre. The square is featured on several postcards and is packed with restaurants, cafes, and colourful artist stalls and has a beautiful and vibrant feel. It also acts as an open-air gallery bustling with locals and tourists.

Visit the Passe Muraille (Walker-through-walls)

This art installation was inspired by the book “Le Passe Muraille” which was about a man who could walk through walls.

Snap a picture of the “Sinking House”

The sinking house is actually an optical illusion, so if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you’ll most likely miss it (like I did). It’s located to the right of the Sacre-Coeur, (if you are facing it). All you have to do is angle your camera just right and there you have it!

Montmartre Windmill

Also known as Moulin de la Galette, this very old windmill was build in 1622 before Montmartre became apart of Paris.

Montmartre Carousel

Montmartre Carousel

Located at the base of the Sacre-Coeur, in the Place St-Pierre, is the Montmartre carousel. A picturesque little spot to snap some photos.

La Maison Rose

This cute Instagrammable cafe is definitely worth visiting. Artists like Picasso used to frequent this cafe and let’s not forget to mention that it’s pink!

Le Consulat

Located within walking distance of the Sacre-Coeur, this crazy popular restaurant is one place you want to visit…even if it’s just to snap a photo.
